North Wales Fire and Rescue Service offers safety tips for bonfire night

ORGANISED events are the safest way to enjoy bonfire night, according to the fire service.

County safety manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service Kevin Roberts said attending the events, where fireworks are set off by people trained to do it, will reduce the risk of any injuries.

But, for those planning their own celebrations, he gave some useful advice.

“People planning to have fireworks at home should make sure children are kept away from them,” he said.

“A responsible adult should be in charge of setting off the fireworks and whoever that is shouldn’t drink any alcohol.

“If you’re having a bonfire you should let your neighbours know first and ensure the fire is away from fences, buildings and shrubbery.

“Buckets of water or hosepipes should be close to hand in case the fire does get out of control.”

Mr Roberts said the service was working with the police and Trading Standards to stop youngsters playing with fireworks.

He said: “It is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18 and any youths caught setting them off will be arrested and prosecuted.”
