Flintshire County Council staff trek up Mount Kilimanjaro for charities

THREE charitable members of Flintshire County Council have been hitting the heights in east Africa in aid of two good causes.

Fran Griffiths and Liz Egan from the lifelong learning department successfully made their way up the 19,340ft Mount Kilimanjaro in six days.

Both raised £3,000 in donations for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Fran said: “The best part for both of us was reaching the top at 6.20am seeing the fantastic glaciers bathed in the African sun which had risen as we were walking.”

Coincidentally, at the 15,500ft mark, Fran and Liz bumped into another council employee.

Duke of Edinburgh Award worker Gary Williams was walking with another group in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association when the trio met up.

Gary’s inspiration is a former colleague from the council, who was diagnosed with MND in 2007.

Gary, who has raised about £4,000 for the charity, said: “The trek was tough and emotional, but also uplifting due to the fantastic people I met.”
