North Wales Fire and Rescue Service gives frozen pipe advice to Flintshire residents

AS the cold weather takes hold, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is warning Flintshire residents to take extra care in their homes.

Kevin Brain, Flintshire operations manager, said: “There have been a number of incidents where residents have put their lives and properties in danger while trying to defrost their plumbing systems.

“It is vitally important people keep warm and safe in their homes, but to keep safe they must bear in mind simple fire safety precautions and ensure their actions are not putting their lives and the lives of their loved ones at risk.

“Frozen pipes are a big worry for many, but leaving a heater unattended in an unused area is not the answer.

“Neither is using a blowtorch to defrost pipes covered in combustible lagging, or near insulation roof material.

“The use of a naked flame in such a manner is dangerous.

“Pipes should be insulated to protect them from the elements – if they become frozen, people should seek advice from a reputable plumbing company.”
