Jury to retire in Hawarden rape trial

A JURY trial at Mold Crown Court – which is considering charges of rape against a man and a woman – has been sent home and asked to return to consider their verdicts on Wednesday.

After listening to closing speeches this morning (Monday), the judge said that the court was not sitting tomorrow.

He said that he would sum the case up on Wednesday morning and then ask the jury of eight women and four men to retire to consider their verdicts at about lunchtime.

Hairdresser Paul Kershaw, 34, of Claypit Manor, Claypit Lane in Rowton, Chester, and co-defendant Lisa Rodda, 40, of Sidmouth Road, Ashton upon Mersey, near Sale, both deny rape and sexual assault.

Simon Mills, prosecuting, claims the two defendants, disinhibited by alcohol, used the female complainant as a sexual ‘play-thing’ after they returned to a house in Hawarden after a night out in Chester.

Rodda is alleged to have held her down while Kershaw assaulted and later raped her.
