Rees Developments, Chester, has smart way of dealing with metal thieves

A CHESTER-BASED building services firm is taking a smart approach to tackling metal thieves.

Rees Developments of Stanley Place is now applying Smartwater to all its building works throughout the city, including Chester Cathedral, replacing lead stolen from the roof.

Smartwater is placed upon materials and leaves no visible trace to the naked eye.

However, the fluid shows up under UV light, meaning scrap metal dealers and recyclers can scan the metal for traces of Smartwater and catch out criminals.

Managing director Vincent Rees said: “We have started to implement Smartwater in all our works, as part of becoming a new strategic partner with the Smartwater UK company.

“There is a 100% conviction rate with Smartwater at present and it’s not very costly, so it’s very important to have it.”
