Your Champions 2011: Flintshire’s Five Villages Chronicle nominated for team award

THE team behind the popular Five Villages Chronicle paper have been nominated for a Your Champions award.

The small team of volunteers create a quarterly newspaper dedicated to the villages of Carmel, Gorsedd, Lloc, Pantasaph and Whitford.

The edition also serves as an advertising platform for local businesses and is delivered by more than 50 volunteers.

It has been going for 25 years and will print its 100th edition at Christmas.

The team has been nominated by Carmel resident and county councillor Chris Dolphin.

“This is a small team of people who have been very active in the community for 25 years,” he said.

“The paper is very well read, it’s self-funding and binds the whole community together.

“In an area like this, where we don’t have any shops to meet or exchange information, this brings the community together through the written word. It’s really, really important. The edition is sent around the world and the rest of the UK to people who have moved away but who want to keep in the loop.

“The present team will retire soon and pass on the mantle to another group of volunteers and I just want to say what a fantastic job editor Terry Ireland has done.”

The paper features a letters page, columns from local Assembly Members and MPs, the local schools contribute, there is a children’s page, a place for poetry as well as fundraising news and columns from the RNLI.

“It’s a real community effort and is wonderful,” added Chris.
