Airbus UK Broughton: Wingmakers draw 2-2 at home to Neath

Airbus UK Broughton 2 Neath 2

WINGMAKERS boss Craig Harrison hailed the character of his players after they came from behind to draw 2-2 at home to Welsh Premier League big spenders Neath on Sunday.

Watched by a crowd of 224 – a healthy figure given the fact the match coincided with the Merseyside derby – Airbus were seemingly heading for defeat after the visitors raced into a two-goal lead.

But the Wingmakers, prompted by the excellent Danny Desormeaux, reduced the deficit in the 70th minute through an Andy Moran penalty and levelled six minutes later when Matty Cook headed in his first goal of the season.

Harrison said: “I am naturally pleased – again we showed great character to come back from a two-goal deficit.”

Nothing in the opening stages suggested there was a dramatic finale ahead.

Leon Clowes, Mark Allen and Gio Feliciello did well to nullify the threat of former Swansea City star Lee Trundle in the first half, but the home side suffered a blow just before the break.

Chad Bond put in a pin-point cross for Andy Hill, who headed Neath into a 1-0 lead.

The South Wales side looked to have moved into an unassailable lead nine minutes into the second half when Trundle dribbled his way towards the area and set up Bond, who poked home for 2-0.

But Airbus were thrown a lifeline 20 minutes from time when sub Paul McManus was needlessly hauled down in the penalty area.

Moran stepped up and converted the resultant spot-kick, driving it low to keeper Craig Morris’ left.

The goal sparked Airbus into life and, soon after, Nick Rushton prodded narrowly wide after a great move orchestrated by Desormeaux.

The equalising goal arrived on 76 minutes when a Feliciello corner to the near post was headed home by super sub Cook.

Both Cook and McManus had entered the fray for the final half hour – and both had played their part in hauling Airbus back into the game.

The Wingmakers were in action last night, hosting Newtown in a rearranged league fixture played after the Chronicle had gone to press.

A win would have sent Airbus, who make the long trip south this Sunday to take on Llanelli (2pm), up to fourth.

The Airfield in Broughton played host to international football last Wednesday.

Wales lost 2-0 to Poland in an under-23 clash.
