Clwyd League: Cup joy for Aston Park Rangers 3rds and Greenfield

ASTON Park Rangers 3rds won the Halkyn Cup for the second year running on Friday night – two days after Greenfield lifted the Premier Cup.

Jeff Ashcroft and Anthony Weaver ensured Aston retained their crown with a 2-0 victory over Meliden while Greenfield won their showpiece showdown with Abergele Rovers 1-0 thanks to Wayne Bayliss.

Three Flintshire teams booked their place in the quarter-finals of the President’s Cup on Saturday.

Division Two’s Wepre Rangers, courtesy of Carl Butler (2) and Paul Hines, won 3-2 at home to the Premier Division’s Denbigh Town Reserves while Division One champions Gap Connah’s Quay Reserves edged an epic penalty shoot-out at the Premier Division’s Halkyn United Reserves 11-10. The third-round tie had finished 4-4 after extra-time, with Dwaine Durham, Steven Burke and Kevin Smart on target for Halkyn, James Gambino (3) and Aaron Kinnear for Nomads.

The Premier Division’s Flint Town United Reserves, through Liam Ashbrooke, Paul Williams and Steve Thomas, won 3-0 at Division One’s Point of Ayr while Division One’s Aston Park Rangers Reserves went down 8-1 at home to Division Two’s St Asaph despite leading through Tom Taylor.
