Football: Rhydymwyn return to the top of the Welsh National League

AFTER weeks of reeling them in, RHYDYMWYN have finally overhauled Mold Alex to return to the top of the Welsh National League Premier Division.

The result that did it was a 2-0 victory on the road at Overton.

The game was heading for a goalless stalemate until, in the 70th minute, Owen Ward scored an own goal.

After that the hosts were further punished by a sending off for Josh Bettley before Chris Guy scored Rhyd’s second.

At the same time MOLD ALEX were losing their grip on top spot with a 2-1 defeat at Llangollen.

All the goals came in the second half, with Llan’s Simon Williams scoring from a pennalty and Mold equalising before Williams settled it.

HAWARDEN RANGERS defeated Venture 2-1 in the third road trip for a Flintshire side in the top flight.

Venture led at the interval through Neil Evans but Ryan Cunliffe levelled in the second half for Rangers and Danny Sullivan scored late on to secure the points.

PENYFFORDD saw off Corwen 3-1 thanks to goals from Simon Smith, Sam Richardson and Herbie Driffield.

In Division One CASTELL ALUN COLTS (Danny Hughes, Simon Butler, Aaron Roberts) beat NEW BRIGHTON 3-2 and Glynceiriog suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of MOLD JUNIORS, who even scored an own goal for ’Ceiriog.
