Football: Deeside College trio get Welsh international call-up

THREE Deeside College students ended 2012 by receiving call-ups to the Welsh national football squad.

Sports students Jessica Lowrie, 17, and Abbie Shore, 18, and Applied Science student Sydney Hinchliffe 17, all attended the recent Wales Women’s Under 19 team training camp, which was held in Cardiff.

The three talented footballers, from Connah’s Quay, Shotton and Ruthin respectively, spent two days at the camp, testing their fitness, training and playing matches as part of the preparation for the European Under 19 Championships which will be held in Wales next year.

Lowrie, who last season transferred from Stoke City U17s to Blackburn Rovers Ladies, has already been capped for her country, playing for Wales U17s against Switzerland. After completing her course she hopes to gain a scholarship in America to study for a degree while playing football.

For Shore, a goalkpeeper with Welsh Women’s Premier League side Northop Hall Girls, it is her first international call-up.

She was spotted at the end of last season and hopes to coach youngsters when she completes her course.

Deeside College Director of 14-19 education Chris Thomas said: “This is a great achievement for Jessica, Abbie, and Sydney. Being called up to represent your country is a real honour. We will have our fingers crossed for all three making the final squad next year.”
