Football: Mold Alex capitalise on dramatic circumstances to progress in cup

MOLD Alex benefited from the bad fortune of Brymbo as they marched on in the NEWFA Challenge Cup.

Brymbo took a third-minute lead and looked dominant until defender Craig Hughes was taken to hospital with a gashed head and they were then reduced to 10 men when Joe Garner was dismissed.

Those two incidents rocked them and Alex took advantage, Damian Kettley, Adam Renshaw, Luke Tyson and Simon Hulse securing the win.

Holders Cefn Druids savaged a weakened GAP Connah’s Quay Nomads Reserves 8-0.

Rhydymwyn (Dave Bryan Tom Littler) only just scraped past Castell Alun Colts (Dave Bullough) 2-1 while FC Nomads of Connah’s Quay (Nicky Jones) were sunk 3-1 by Hawarden Rangers (Matty Phillips, Rhys Pearce, Dean Hardstaff).

Llangollen Town were eliminated 3-2 by Penyffordd and Flint Mountain fell 3-0 to Brickfield Rangers (Daniel Jones, Liam Sklenar, Aaron Camplin).

It was a similar story for Greenfield (Wayne Edwards, Terry Jones, Dan Hanley) as they beat Connah’s Quay Tigers 3-0.

Due to the cup action, the Welsh National League Premier Division was restricted to just the three games.

Gresford Athletic versus Saltney Town game was an even affair but the Bordermen made the vital breakthrough in the 63rd minute to win 1-0.

Jake Gibbons held the ball up well before playing in Shaun Hughes who finished.

In Division One, Acrefair stay in touch with the leaders following their 2-1 win at Argoed United.

A goal in each half from Nicky Williams and Adam Roberts proved enough despite Paul Worrall hitting back for hosts Argoed.

Llanuwchllyn polished off New Brighton with consummate ease 6-1 and Ricky Rowlands and Iolo Jones bagged a brace apiece.

Gethin Edwards from the penalty spot and Adam Williams completed their super six while Robbie Roberts fired a lone consolation goal for the visitors.
