Football: Ysceifiog Wolves suffer heartbreak in national final of Tesco Cup at St Andrews

YSCEIFIOG Wolves suffered heartbreak as they lost on penalties in the national finals of the under 13s Tesco Cup.

Having qualified to represent Wales in the competition, the Wolves took on the best of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland at St Andrews, home of relegated Birmingham City.

In their first match they defeated Dungoyne of Northern Ireland 1-0 with Liam Smith on target. That put them into the final to face the champions of England, Staplehurst Monarchs from Kent.

The Wolves went 1-0 down in the first half but two minutes from the end Sam Meredith headed home an equaliser to take it to extra-time. Unable to find a winner, the game went to penalties where the Flintshire side lost 5-4.

Consolation came when Joe Lloyd was named best defender in the competition and Liam Smith best striker, with both receiving their awards from Arsenal and England legend Martin Keown.
