Football: Gap Connah’s Quay Academy bow out bravely in FAW Academy Cup semi-final

GAP Connah’s Quay Academy under 12s were knocked out of the FAW Academy Cup at the semi-final stage in an epic penalty shootout.

They faced Rhyl at Belle Vue and kept things tight throughout, keeper Jay Lloyden being in top form.

Thomas Blackwell gave Nomads the lead but Rhyl equalised with three minutes to go, meaning spot-kick drama. By the end 21 penalties were taken with Nomads losing 8-7.

Quay’s U19 travelled to Glan Conwy Reserves for their Academy Cup semi final on one of the smallest pitch in North Wales.

The game was physical and tough but after going down by a goal in the first half, Nomads brought it back through George Baxter to send the game into extra time.

Nomads pressed in stoppage time with Aled Reece coming close twice, his second a headed effort cleared off the line. But with minutes to go Glan Conwy played a long throw into the box and scored to claim the win.
