Badminton: Debutants Beth McLellan and Scott Oates help Wales to Celtic Challenge glory

A YOUNG Flintshire duo are basking in the glory of memorable international debuts.

Beth McLellan and Scott Oates were pulling on the Wales shirt for the first time in the annual Celtic Challenge in Dublin.

But the Deeside players were far from overawed as they helped the Wales Under 13s see off the challenge of Lothian, Leinster and Ulster to take the trophy.

Flintshire U15s are off the mark in the Shires League.

The county stars beat Staffordshire 14-6 to the delight of managers Mike Cain and Alison Oates, who were full of praise for their team’s gutsy performance.

Denbigh’s Matthew Vacher and Castell Alun’s Ellen Liddle, and Flint’s Dan Noble and Mold’s Sophie Ellis, were successful in the mixed doubles, but Flint’s Elliot Wheeler and Connah’s Quay’s Isabelle Cain lost a nailbiter.

Vacher, Connah’s Quay’s Dan Ellis and Noble triumphed in the boys singles as did Cain, Liddle, Sophie Ellis and Prestatyn’s Sophie Wilson in the girls singles.

The boys one won of their doubles matches, courtesy of Vacher and Dan Ellis, leaving it up to the girls to save the day as Cain and Liddle, and Wilson and Sophie Ellis, won all four of theirs.
