Your Champions: Mynydd Isa duo Vic Harrison and Mac Pearse nominated for team award
TWO community volunteers have been nominated for Team of the Year in the Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions awards.
Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch Association (FNWA) has nominated Vic Harrison and Mac Pearse of Mynydd Isa for their years of volunteer work in the community.
Jackie Lee of the FNWA said: “Vic and Mac selflessly help their elderly neighbours with everyday tasks as well as gardening, taking people shopping and to the hospital, doctor and dentist.
“During the harsh winter Vic and Mac also helped clear driveways to get people out and about.
“They both have generous personalities with an appetite for helping people in need. Nothing is too much trouble. They will always put other people’s needs before their own.
“We are very proud to nominate Vic and Mac for this prestigious award. The many people they help are so grateful for all that they do for them. They really do make a difference to people’s lives. Every street should have its own Vic and Mac.”
Mac Pearse of West View, Mynydd Isa, moved in next door to Vic 30 years ago and they have been close friends ever since.
“Vic and I have always done a lot of volunteering,” he said. “We just want to do what we can to help people, I think it’s our age and the way we were brought up, it’s about being respectful. People know that can come to us for help if they can’t get to the hospital or their door is stuck or something.
“I would like to think that if I wasn’t around someone would do the same for my wife if she needed help with the lawns or something.
“People don’t know their neighbours anymore, so helping people doesn’t happen as often.
“Since Neighbourhood Watch has formed it has really brought our community together and, as neighbours, we all have dinner every Christmas at the Plas Hafod now.”
