SUPPORT has been shown for a campaign to increase organ donation and transplantation in the NHS by 50% by 2013.
Alyn and Deeside Labour MP Mark Tami is backing the national campaign and said: “There are currently 8,000 people waiting for an organ transplant in Britain today, but sadly 1,000 will die every year for want of a new organ.
“NHS clinicians deliver incredible outcomes for organ transplantation patients, but more needs to be done to identify donors and encourage a culture of donation, both within the NHS and society more generally.
“I look forward to campaigning with Transplant 2013 in Parliament this year and next to make organ transplantation a life-saving reality.”
Keith Rigg, chairman of Transplant 2013 and president of the British Transplantation Society, said: “Mark’s support provides much-needed national leadership to Transplant 2013 and we look forward to working together to overcome policy challenges and cultural barriers to donation.
“Transplantation is a unique form of medicine that can restore good health to the seriously ill in a matter of days with minimal side effects. More can be done and must be done.”
