Cricket: Victory in vain as Northop Hall miss out on promotion

A THUMPING final-game victory was not enough to earn Northop Hall promotion from the Liverpool & District Competition First Division.

Gareth Williams’s men did all they could on Saturday by winning at Formby by 162 runs.

That, however, was not enough to move them up from third to second and above Fleetwood Hesketh, whose seven-wicket success over Newton-le-Willows ensures they will take their place in next year’s Premier Division alongside champions Wallasey.

It was tough to take for a Hall side who won their final five completed games of the campaign.

Michael Littler was their star at Formby. He hit an unbeaten 104 from 124 balls to fire the visitors to 269-5dec.

Danny Nolan (54) and Alex Smith (31) also contributed for Hall, who then bowled their hosts out for 107 inside 29 overs.

Nolan (3-12), Joe Williams (2-18), Edmund Markey (2-25), Will Higginson (2-33) and James Hurlin (1-5) shared the wickets.

Northop Hall 2nds, meanwhile, finished sixth in the 2nd XI Premier Division after winning their final match by seven wickets at home to Formby 2nds.

Paul Higginson (58) and Daniel Clubbe (4-36) starred.
