Football: Holywell Town go marching on in Welsh Trophy

GRESFORD Athletic crashed out of the Welsh Trophy after a 3-1 defeat at the home of an impressive-looking Holywell Town outfit.

Town’s Steve Thomas beat Gareth Rowland from close range inside the opening quarter of an hour.

Gresford responded on the half hour mark in fortunate fashion via a deflected Mike Pugh free-kick.

The Wellmen edged ahead again on 60 minutes as the hapless Gresford goalkeeper saw the ball loop over his head and into the net.

Town put the game beyond doubt soon after.

In the Welsh National League Premier Division, Mold Alex got back to winning ways against Llay Welfare.

Caretaker manager Andy Crabtree led his side to a 4-0 win with goals from Jay Ralphs (2), Joe Brizzell and Simon Holloway.

Struggling Brickfield Rangers took a welcome point away from their game with Hawarden Rangers.

Rene Pinard and Naz Farhat netted for Brickie but Lewis Cunliffe and substitute Simon Roden hit back for Rangers as the teams played out a 2-2 draw.

In Division One, Penyffordd and Garden Village contested a top of the table clash.

Goals from Adam Pugh, Sam Richardson and Phil Simon secured a comfortable 3-0 win for Penyffordd.

Dave Catherall earned Buckley United a 1-0 win against Penley.
