Futsal: Saltney Town book place in FAW Cup finals as Gap Connah’s Quay go out

SALTNEY Town have qualified for the FAW Futsal Finals after having played only two games of the sport before Sunday’s regional competition.

The North Wales qualifiers for the five-a-side competition – played on a hard court surface and using a smaller football – were held at Maes Glas in Bangor last Sunday and the Bordermen had to come through a very tough qualifying group, facing futsal regulars Overton and Wrexh am as well as Cymru Alliance big boys Rhyl.

But Saltney were victorious in all three games, beating Overton 12-5, Rhyl 11-7 and Wrexham 7-3.

They will now progress to the National Finals on Sunday, May 13 at Deeside Leisure Centre, where they will compete against TNS, Conwy United, Cardiff City Futsal, Cardiff Corinthians and Rhayader for the top prize of £1,500.

They have already won £250 for qualifying for the national finals and player/manager Marc Edwards was delighted.

“We entered the competition simply to gain new experience,” he said. “We never thought for a second we would get this far.

“I still can’t believe we had only played two games of futsal prior to the day.

“I must thank Richie Jones at Wrexham Futsal and ref Arthur Smallman who have been key in helping us get to where we are.”

Gap Connah’s Quay were eliminated 7-6 by TNS at the qualifying tournament.
