Rugby union: Top spot belongs to Shotton Steel once more

Harlech 15Shotton Steel 33

THE Steelmen returned to the top of Swalec League Division Three North with a hard fought win over Harlech.

Early in the season Shotton won by a point in the Swalec Bowl at Harlech so were expecting a close encounter.

They got off to a dream start after a strong early scrum put the home side on the back foot, and good quick ball from the forwards enabled Adam Lynskey to chip ahead for full back Karl Rusowicz to finish, fly half Steve Ellson converting.

The sides then swapped penalties before Steel struck again.

From a lineout the play spread wide with Rusowicz releasing Alex Thomas to ground in the corner.

Harlech grabbed a try to reduce the arrears before the break but a moment of magic from Daniel Lynskey in the second half sung the game firmly in Shotton’s favour.

Lynskey, playing in the back row, found space around halfway before outpacing the Harlech defence to cross.

He grabbed his second, and Shotton's bonus point fourth, soon after.

Harlech battled but their late try was not enough to save the game as Ellson slotted a third penalty with the last kick of the game.

The Steelmen host Benllech on Saturday.
