THE mother of a three-year-old with cystic fibrosis has won the Flintshire Chronicle’s Community Champions award for her fundraising work.
Annika Thorley, 31, of Greenfield, near Holywell, has even shaved her head in a bid to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which helps people including her daughter Ffion, three.
The national charity deals with all aspects of the condition and funds research into treatment and a cure.
Annika, who also has a two-year-old son, Rhys, has had her hair shaven off, along with her sister, to raise £700 for the charity.
She has also taken part in an abseil and a spacehopper race in Santa suits and helped with stalls to raise cash.
Annika started fundraising more than a year ago, after receiving help from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
"The Trust has given me a lot of help," she said. "Whenever I need advice I get in touch with them and they’re really good.
"Looking after a child with cystic fibrosis is a lot more work than looking after a healthy child.
"I have to make sure Ffion takes her medication every time she eats and be extra careful that she doesn’t pick up any coughs or colds."
The disease clogs internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, and can result in infections, inflammation in the lungs and difficulty digesting food.
Annika now plans to undertake a sponsored skydive.
