Your Champions: Flintshire School of the Year - Hawarden Infant School

A CREATIVE infant school has been won the Flintshire Chronicle’s Your Champions school award.

Hawarden Infant School, Cross Tree Lane, has been working hard to get its pupils out and about. For its eco-classroom and forest school activities.

Headteacher Lynn Bartlett said: "The children love the forest school activities.

"They go out in groups dressed in little water- proof suits and tell stories, sing songs and learn about the weather, the seasons and all the animals and birds. Sometimes they plant flowers or make things,.

"It really helps them connect with nature and engage with the environment and it’s an excellent way to teach science."

The eco-classroom was built with Lottery funding and help from local businesses. It has four raised vegetable beds, one for each year group, and an adventure playground.

The children grow vegetables and sell them to each other in a pretend shop so it teaches them about maths and money.

"We did a survey with parents from the school and 100% said their children came home and talked about growing things and what they had done in forest school," added Mrs Bartlett.

"It’s very good for the children’s all-round education and well-being as it teaches them things from across the curriculum."
