Flintshire temperatures among lowest on record

RECENT temperatures in Flintshire have officially been among the coldest on record, according to the Met Office’s weather monitoring station in Hawarden.

The station recorded a low of -12.6°C (9.3°F) over the weekend, making the county one of the coldest in the UK as the big freeze continues to bite.

Last month the station recorded the lowest-ever temperature for Hawarden in November, registering -9.9°C (14.2°F).

But while freezing temperatures are forecast to continue across the county over the Christmas weekend, and fears grow over the lingering frost and ice, the threat of severe snow showers has begun to subside for Flintshire residents.

Met Office forecaster Rebekah Sherwin said: “There will be a lot of dry weather, but it will remain very cold.

“It will be getting windier towards the end of the week and there may be a few snow showers, but nothing significant.

“Any snow which has not cleared will still be there by the weekend due to the temperatures, so while it might not be a true white Christmas, there will still be snow around on the ground.”

Although the temperature in Hawarden was one of the coldest on record, it still has some way to go to match the lowest ever temperature recorded for North Wales at -22.7°C (-8.9°F), set in Corwen in December 1981.
