Rugby union: Mold secure first victory of the season over Ruthin

Ruthin 10 Mold 26

LES Byrne’s Mold side took a huge stride forward by beating Ruthin but the coach conceded it was only the start and there was still a lot of work to do.

The Flintshire outfit landed their first victory of the season on the road to leave another of last season’s high-flyers, Llandudno, as the only side in Division One North of the Swalec League still without a win.

After the triumph at Cae Ddol, Byrne said: “It is coming but it is going to take a little more time.

“We are working hard to develop our play with ball in hand, and it is coming.”

Fly-half Jamie Winning got Mold going as he sent Richard Hopkins across the line for a try.

But the hosts hit back to take the lead with a converted try to nudge ahead.

Two penalties from Ashley James put Mold back into the lead before another kick, this time from Ruthin, switched the momentum, if not the lead, back in their favour.

In the second half, Mold remained tight and executed their game plan well.

Hopkins darted away for his second try of the game, converted by James before a Steve Quinton penalty put Mold 21-10 ahead, and Winning had the last word, crossing the whitewash late on to secure victory.

Mold 2nds lost 26-17 to Ruthin at home.

Mold had a half-time 17-12 lead through two tries by Jamie Winner and one by Sam Wilding. Winner converted once.

In the second half, Ruthin hit back with two converted tries to add to their two first-half tries and a conversion to give them victory.

On Saturday, Mold’s first team go to Cobra in the North Wales Cup.
