WELSH Junior Sportsperson of the Year Jade Jones, of Flint, has failed to make the final three in the BBC’s main Young Sports Personality award.
Two-time winner Tom Daley, Commonwealth bronze medal-winning weightlifter Zoe Smith and World Junior 100m champion Jodie Williams were the three selected to attend the live televised awards ceremony at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena.
One of them will be crowned Young Sports Personality of the Year 2010 this Sunday.
But the judging panel, chaired by BBC Sport’s John Inverdale and made up of BBC Formula One presenter Jake Humphrey, Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton, Sportsround presenter Ore Oduba, previous winners of the award plus representatives from Sports Personality and the Youth Sport Trust, decided to leave tae kwon-do ace Jones – who won Great Britain’s first ever Youth Olympic gold medal – out of the final three.
Being shortlisted for the BBC award was a major achievement for the 17-year-old, who has this year established herself as a hot contender for a medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
