A GROUP of women who run a support centre for victims of domestic abuse had ‘a night to remember’ at the Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions awards.
The Deeside Domestic Abuse Safety Unit (DASU) was crowned regional Team of the Year at the ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chester on Friday.
The team, already named Flintshire Team of the Year, works tirelessly to help victims of domestic abuse, who are predominantly female, to receive all the support they need.
The specially trained domestic abuse safety advisers give advice on how to recognise signs of abuse, personal safety, how to access safe houses and ways to regain self-confidence and move on from the relationship.
They offer free and confidential advice and operate a 24-hour helpline.
The team was nominated for the award by Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant.
Gina Edwards, domestic abuse safety adviser for DASU, said: “It is difficult to find words, we are absolutely delighted. This is the first award we have won since we set up 21 years ago.
“To be nominated by Carl Sargeant was fabulous and we were over the moon to win locally in Flintshire.
“To take the overall award was an honour and unexpected – especially when you look at all the people we were up against.
“The whole evening was wonderful from start to finish.”
Since the unit relocated from Deeside Enterprise Park in Shotton to a new premises in Chester Road East in late April, staff have dealt with an average of 100 cases a month.
