Chester FC: Liverpool head to Exacta Stadium for July friendly against Blues

CHESTER FC will test themselves against a Liverpool XI in a summer friendly at the Exacta Stadium.

This season’s Carling Cup winners and FA Cup finalists will send a team to take on Neil Young’s title-winners on Wednesday, July 25.

The Merseysiders’ first-team squad will be in the middle of a pre-season tour of North America when the Chester match takes place, but players who do not make the trip across the Atlantic can expect to be given a run-out at the Exacta.

Academy starlets could well be picked alongside any internationals who miss the American tour because they are involved in the latter stages of this summer’s European Championships – meaning household names like Pepe Reina, Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt could feature.

Chester chief executive Pat Cluskey said: “Liverpool can’t commit to exactly what kind of team they will put out at this stage, but they understand that it is a fixture which we hope will attract a big crowd and generate funds for the club.”

Cluskey plans to hold further talks with his Anfield counterparts in June about using the Exacta for selected Liverpool reserve team fixtures next season.

The Reds were due to face Manchester United’s second string there in January but a frozen pitch forced the game to be postponed.

The Liverpool match is one of five pre-season fixtures already arranged by the Blues. It replaces a planned meeting with Blackburn Rovers, who agreed to cancel their trip to the Exacta once Chester were approached by the Reds.

Chester travel to AFC Fylde on July 15, host Southport on July 17, Scottish League Cup winners Kilmarnock on July 21 and Blue Square Premier champions Fleetwood Town on August 7.

The Blues are running an online poll to pick the club’s goal of the season. For further information, visit
