Football: All Flintshire sides bow out of Welsh Trophy at first round stage

CLUBS were mainly occupied with the Welsh Trophy this week but it was not a great first round for Flintshire teams.

Terry Pugh scored for RHYDYMWYN but with six minutes remaining it was only a consolation as they crashed out 4-1 at Bodedern.

GREENFIELD bowed out 1-0 at Bro Goronwy and HALKYN UNITED slumped 7-0 at Carno.

SALTNEY TOWN put up a good fight, taking a 2-0 lead inside five minutes thanks to Jason Wright and Jake Gibbons, but Llandudno Junction bounced back and won 3-2.

That was the same scoreline that did for CONNAH’S QUAY TOWN, as they lost at Llanllyfni despite goals from Mark Williams and Carl Wilson twice giving them the lead.

In the only Welsh Alliance game of the day, HOLYWELL TOWN closed the gap on top side Pwllheli to just two points as they defeated Bethesda Athletic 3-0.

Wayne Edwards was straight out of the blocks, scoring in the fifth minute to give the Wellmen the lead.

It wasn’t until 10 minutes had gone in the second half that he doubled his tally, firing home in the 5th minutes.

Shaun Jones then stepped up to finish the job, finding the net on 70 minutes to compound Bethesda’s misery.

The league leaders have a game in hand over the Wellmen, but Holywell have the points on the board so the pressure is on Pwllheli.
